Meet Blue Dino

Blue Dino Fencing is a small, locally rooted business serving Pittsburgh and the surrounding region with high-quality fence repair and custom builds. Whether it’s wood, vinyl, aluminum, or chain-link, our focus is the same: build it better than it has to be — and treat every property like it belongs to a friend. We don’t overcomplicate things. We show up, we listen, and we build fences that last.

With over 15 years of hands-on experience in the fencing industry, I’ve honed my craft to deliver precision, durability, and style in every project. While I’ve built a business grounded in my own expertise, I’m fortunate to have the support and guidance of my close friend, Joel—affectionately known as "Coach" to my sons—who brings over 30 years of experience in the trade. I started this company to create security for my family, and help build peace of mind for other families along the way.  We are going to start, as always, with integrity as our foundation, to frame out the trust we will build with our clients... Now, why on earth is it called Blue Dino??

The story behind the name says more than any mission statement ever could.

I didn’t name the company after some branding workshop or clever marketing ploy. I named it Blue Dino because of a little plastic dinosaur in my boot.

Back when I was still doing early-morning labor — sky black, boots cold, running on teething-toddler sleep, back sore, shoulder stiff — I’d slide my foot into my work boot and feel a sharp jab. It was almost always one of my son Beckham’s toy dinosaurs. He was a toddler then, always leaving those in my boots like little landmines of love. Maybe he thought I’d like the surprise. Maybe it was just a home for the dino — a steel-toe cave — but it planted something deeper: a reminder of what matters most.  When running on fumes, you frame the day right and let it anchor you.

Every time I stepped on one of those jagged dinos, I’d laugh. Or curse, then laugh. But mostly I’d stop and remember: this is why I’m doing this.  I’m building something here — not just fences, but a life. Something stable for my wife, for my kids. A name to stand behind. A future to stand inside of.

I’m a transplant here — born in Kentucky, married a Pittsburgh girl, wound up setting roots in this here steel city.  A city that’s rough-edged and full of character, just like the people in it. I wasn't raised here, but I admire and respect it deeply; and I'm truly grateful for the opportunity to raise my kids here. I’m not here to be the cheapest, and I’m not trying to be the biggest. I just want to do work I’m proud of, fences that stand up straight and don’t blink when the wind kicks up.  You’ll find me on-site, boots on, taking pride in every job we touch. And if I'm slightly limping from a dino wound, well, that just means I started the day off right.

Shorter sections = Stronger fences

Most wood fences are built with standard 8-foot panels that sag and weaken over time; we custom-build every fence using sections around 7 feet long or less. This simple but powerful difference means:

  • Straighter, Stronger Rails - Our 7' sections experience over 41% less deflection/sag & 23% less stress than standard 8-foot spans, keeping your fence straight and secure for decades. Our 6' sections cut those rates down to 68% less deflection/sag & 44% less stress than standard 8' sections. Spreading those high winds over more posts means a stronger line, and fences under less duress will last longer.
  • Engineered for Pittsburgh Weather - With shorter sections, wind pressure is spread evenly across the fence line. Minimizing the “sail effect” as each rail is stronger and each post experiences less stress due to the load being spread over more posts.
  • Strength & Security - When we built in the Rocky Mountains outside Denver, most town codes required 5ft max spacing between posts, due to the strength of the storms. - That is 85% less deflection/sag & 61% less stress than a standard 8' section. We can make that happen if these recent strong winds have you questioning privacy fence styles.
  • Built to Last - Our rails are screwed in for maximum grip and strength as the wood swells and shrinks inevitably in our environment. Every picket is securely fastened with hot-dipped ring-shank nails, or if they are cedar, we use stainless or ceramic coated to prevent streaking. No shortcuts, never any of those garbage quality, prebuilt panels—just folks that were raised to things the right way, the first time.
  • Nerdy Stuff -  All calculations assume a uniformly distributed load, e.g. wind pressure, and identical 2×4 rail cross-section. Deflection ∝ L^4 and stress ∝ L^2, where L represents span length... If you want to get into the numbers behind why we go with short sections, this page does a good job explaining the relationship between material strength, span length, and external forces: https://blog.truegeometry.com/calculators/custom/SS_BEAM_TVL.html#:~:text=Breaking%20down%20this%20expression%20further%3A
  • Cosmetic - Our shorter sections match the ever-changing grade of this region more seamlessly than longer sections can, giving your fence a natural flow to it.

Fence Repair

As a family-focused business, we understand that it can be difficult to find room in the budget for a whole new fence.  We take the time to diagnose the issue, and its cause, to find the best solution for your needs and budget. Sometimes it's just a gate repair or rebuild. If we can fix it and help your existing fence reach its full lifespan — while saving you money — that’s a win-win.
